Private Equity Market in Russia 2010: 1.6 Billion USD of New Deals and 4.4 Billion USD of New Funds

Private Equity Russia & CIS Journal (PERCIS) published overview of private equity market in Russia and CIS in 2010.
After decline in 2009 private equity market in Russia showed growth in 2010. In total, in 2010, there were thirty deals made with private equity funds. Among them, eight were exit deals. The total value of the deals exceeds 1,628 million USD, including a volume of 384 million USD of exit deals. There were four deals worth more than 100 million USD: in Finance & Insurance, Food & Beverage and in IT. The average deal size in 2010 was 62.6 million USD.
The leading private equity firms by sum of investments in 2010 are VTB Capital, Baring Vostok Private Equity Fund IV and Lion Capital.
In 2009, most of the deals were made with retail companies. Now the situation has changed – the leading sectors are Finance & Insurance and Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT), both in number of deals and in total investments.
In total, private equity firms announced thirteen new funds that they planned to start, with a total size of more than 4,442 million USD. They have planned to invest in TMT, Agriculture, distressed assets and other sectors.
In the CIS, the most active markets in 2010 were Ukraine and Kazakhstan. The total size of deals in the CIS with private equity funds exceeds 141,5 million USD. The most active funds are Emerging Europe Growth Fund II (EEGF II) and Tau Capital.
In the CIS in 2010 a total of seven of new funds were announced with a total size of 1,628 million USD. Almost half of the funds are planned to invest in distressed assets.
"Year 2010 showed much better results of the private equity market than the previous year, though it did not reach the pre-crisis level." - said Igor Checkoun, Editor-in-chief of Private Equity Russia & CIS Journal. "In 2011 we expect further, but not large growth of the market".
