Private Equity Markets Around The World: Number of Funds and Capital Under Management 28.10.11 0:00

Overview of local private equity markets around the world, based on interviews of the leading local private equity associations managers to Private Equity Russia & CIS Journal (PERCIS).

EUROPE

There are 1,689 Private Equity firms active in Europe, who are together managing €532 billion. The total number of funds managed by these firms is around 4,000.

AUSTRIA

Austrian Private Equity and Venture Capital Organization with 17 full members covers more than 80% of the Austrian Private Equity market. There are about €4 billion capital under management in Austria.

ITALY

AIFI, the Italian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association, comprises 129 full members (private equity players and venture capitalists), that represent almost the totality of the Italian private equity industry. As of December 31 2010 the total portfolio of investors in Italy amounted to 1,160 companies, for an equivalent value, calculated at cost, of 21.5 billion. At the same date, the resources available for investments (not considering pan-European and captive players’ resources) amounted to 8.1 billion.

SWEDEN

Currently there are 129 investors (a mix of LPs, venture capital firms as well as buyout firms and some of them advise a number of private equity funds). The total amount of capital managed that can be invested in Sweden is estimated to around €54 billion.

LATVIA

Latvian venture capital market by international standards is very small with only 6 dedicated local PE and VC fund management companies operating. The total capital under management for such companies can be estimated at around €80 million. However, there are a number of PE firms that operate in a wider Baltic state (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) geography with local offices in Latvia.

USA

For the quarter 2011-Q1, there were 705 funds with assets under management totaling $808 billion.

CANADA

There are just over 130 venture capital, mezzanine and buyout funds in Canada that together comprise the private equity market. These funds have over $76 billion (Canadian) in capital under management.

MEXICO

There are 52 VC and PE funds with $10 billion under management.

INDIA

In 2010 PE firms invested as much as $12 billion in Indian companies, which is more than double the amount invested in 2009. Private equity firms are sitting on at least $20 billion of uninvested capital or dry powder that is ready to be deployed in India.

AUSTRALIA

Number of firms: ~55, number of funds: ~110, funds under management: ~A$23 billion.
